Kaarestunturi is a hill (fell) 25 Km northwest of Sodankylä town. Climbing top of the hill is highly recommended, Although not required to reach this cache.
Kaarestunturi is a 404 metres high fell near the town of Sodankylä. The hill offers good views towards surrounding plains and hills.
Kaarestunturi consists of quartzite and conglomerate, which have resisted weathering well and therefore hill has been preserved so well. Many other fells in Central Lapland (for example Levi, Pyhä-Luosto, Ylläs and Kumputunturi) are also of similar rock type.
The cache is located near a hut along western flank of Kaarestunturi. The route from the hut to the summit is only 300 metres long, but is steep and rocky, so good hiking boots are highly recommended if climbing the top. The summit is also known as Isolaki. There are also three lower summits, namely Kiimalaki, Ristilaki and Tikkalaki.
This geocache is designed to be winter-accessible, but snowmobile is the only practical way to get there during winter. In fact, The hut is located along a marked snowmobile route.
To reach Kaarestunturi, turn to west towards Rajala at a junction north of Sattanen village along Highway 4. Drive past Rajala village and then take Tikkalantie dirt road towards south. There is no designated car park in this area (AFAIK), but there is enough space to leave a car along the road. It is possible to drive past the proposed car park towards south, but the road is not in good condition and eventually a 4x4 vehicle is needed to drive along that road.
There are various forest tracks and walking paths around Kaarestunturi. The one presented here by waypoints mainly follows the snowmobile track, as is well marked, fairly straight and suitable for walking in the summer. The track it swampy in the beginning, but the swamp is easy to divert. Total one-way hiking to the hut is about four kilometres.
Kaarestunturi can also be reached from south by driving Jeesiönratsutie (a gravel road), which connects northern Sodankylä to Jeesiö village.

Kaarestunturin kätkö sijaitsee laavussa, ei aivan tunturin huipulla, mutta lähistöllä kuitenkin. Laavu on moottorikelkkareitin varressa ja kätkölle pääsee myös talvella. Reitti laavulta huipulle on rakkaa ja varsin jyrkkä, mutta maisemien takia sielläkin kannattaa käväistä.
Kaarestunturille pääsee joko etelästä Jeesiönratsutietä pitkin, tai pohjoisesta Rajalan kylän läpi, tässä esitellään jälkimmäinen vaihtoehto. Nelostieltä käännytään Sattasen pohjoispuolella Rajalaa kohti ja ajetaan sen läpi jonka jälkeen käännytään etelään Tikkalantielle, jota ajetaan muutama kilometri. Ehdotetulta parkkipaikalta on vielä noin 4km patikointi kätkölle. Esittämäni reittipisteet seuraa pääosin moottorikelkkareittiä, joka soveltuu hyvin myös kävelyyn kesällä.
