Amsterdam Trad's - Sloterdijk coin & TB Hotel Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

DopamineNL: Hmm, yeah, probably during new years eve or some other fireworks-related vandalism.

Well, this one's done. I've tried two places, the last one should have been safe from bypassers and people watching, but quiet spots do attract a nasty crowd sometimes.

Besides, it never became what it was intended to be: an easy and quick traditional of significant size within easy distance from Schiphol, and/or for travellers to/from Amsterdam.
Most visitors ended up being local Dutch. No disrespect there, but they weren't the targetgroup to begin with.

So long, Sloterdijk cache! And with 'Vol!' and 'zicht op de knip' there are still enough more than enough superfluous caches on ugly spots in this neighbourhood left! ;-)

Geocache Description:

Welcome to Amsterdam!
City of charming canals, lovely parks and cheap entertainment. And of course: lots of geocaches! Although we are not as endowed as many other European or American cities, we do have our share of interesting caches for visitors from abroad. But beware: the Dutch love their micros, multis and mysteries!

Hence this series of traditionals: always at least a size small or bigger, and always English- friendly. Avoiding the major tourist attractions, they try to show lesser known spots about Amsterdam daily life. As geocaching was originally intended.

For more tourist friendly geocaching: check out my list of Amsterdam caches for (foreign) visitors. A concise selection of interesting and English-accessible caches around town. Including a few (not too long) multi’s and mysteries!

Sloterdijk Station coin & TB Hotel

This isn't pretty!
First and foremost: this is not a very lovely spot! In fact, all the Wikipedia info can’t conceal that the only reason to place a cache here is as a convenient Coin & TB Hotel for the nearby busy train station.

So going to or from Schiphol? Day tripping to Noord Holland from Amsterdam? Or commuting daily to one of the many offices nearby? Grab or drop whatever items you like!
Looking for a cache that will show you a nice part of town? Skip this one, and find one of the many other great caches in Amsterdam!

History
The first station (around) here operated from 1890 to 1905 in the Sloten municipality. Later, in 1956 in the village Sloterdijk, a new station was build on the Amsterdam – Haarlem line. It caused the demolishing of most of the old village. This was Station Amsterdam Sloterdijk Zuid, approximately 750 meters southeast of the current location. Later the entire tracks were moved slightly north, and in 1983 the current Station Amsterdam Sloterdijk was opened. It was temporarily called Sloterdijk Noord until the closure of Sloterdijk Zuid in 1985. It was to become the definite train-portal to Noord Holland.
For some the station resembles a football stadium rather than a train station. However, it does service an office district of more than 50.000 employers (Westpoort & Teleport). Amsterdam Sloterdijk is currently the second busiest station of Amsterdam, and the ninth nationally. By 2020 the expected number of daily passengers will have risen to over 100.000.

Current and future plans
The station is undergoing a large transformation, scheduled to finish in 2015. More shops, a new entrance, more room for bikes and a modern bus & tram station should make both the station and the surrounding area more efficient and clean.
One major improvement that won’t be made anytime soon is the continuation of Metro 50, the ringline, all the way through to Central Station. The connection was planned for 2005, delayed until 2010 and then suddenly reconsidered entirely. Current ideas try to disconnect line 50 from CS altogether and instead connect it (straight through the Houthavens!) to the Noordzuidlijn (Northsouthline, under construction) at the future station Van Hasseltweg. Considering the massive budget overruns and political problems surrounding the Noordzuidlijn, it’s not likely gonna happen anytime soon.

ps. If you’re wondering what that lovely old cart on the nearby Carrascoplein is for: it’s a 1927 Wiener Lokalbahn tramcart, renovated into lunchroom "De Amsterdamsche Tram". Open 07-19hr daily.

The Cache

The cache is situated about 250 meters from the Station's main entrance. When leaving the building, turn right and descend the iron spiral stairs. Then proceed to the left (away from the trains) and follow the bike trail. It'll get you to the cache in a three minutes walk. Bring a pen to be sure. The cache is behind the tree. It's a fairly quiet spot, but look out for bikers and people walking dogs.
Be careful, there's a heavy log attached to the plastic cache-box!

A special mention is for Ome Cor, who works across the old location. Hopefully he will continue to keep an eye out even when it has moved a bit away from him!
(and if you walk along the bike-trail in the other direction, especially in the late-afternoon, you'll find an invasion of rabbits!)

FTF gets a 'gold' dollar.

Cache dimensions:

Beware: Urban Caching is less about the search, but all about the STEALTH. They are often easy to find, but hard to log unnoticed!
PLEASE TAKE AS MUCH TIME STEALTHING AS YOU WOULD NORMALLY FOR SEARCHING!
