L'Arcibasilica Laterana o Lateranense, meglio nota come San
Giovanni in Laterano, è la Cattedrale della diocesi di Roma e la
sede ecclesiastica ufficiale del Papa, contenendovi la Cattedra
papale o Santa Sede. È inoltre la prima delle quattro basiliche
papali e la più antica basilica d'Occidente. Il suo nome completo è
Arcibasilica del Santissimo Salvatore e dei Santi Giovanni Battista
ed Evangelista in Laterano, madre e capo di tutte le chiese della
Città (per antonomasia, ossia di Roma) e del mondo (in latino:
Archibasilica Sanctissimi Salvatoris et Sanctorum Iohannis
Baptistae et Evangelistae in Laterano, omnium Urbis et orbis
ecclesiarum mater et caput). Attualmente l'arciprete della basilica
è il cardinale Agostino Vallini, Vicario Generale di Sua Santità
per la città di Roma e distretto, mentre il protocanonico onorario
è di diritto il Presidente della Repubblica Francese. La basilica
ed il vasto complesso circostante (comprendente il Palazzo
Pontificio del Laterano, il Palazzo dei Canonici, il Pontificio
Seminario Romano Maggiore e la Pontificia Università Lateranense),
pur essendo territorio della Repubblica Italiana, godono dei
privilegi di extraterritorialità riconosciuti alla Santa Sede che
pertanto ne ha piena ed esclusiva giurisdizione.

Papale di San Giovanni in Laterano) is the cathedral of the Church
of Rome, Italy, and the official ecclesiastical seat of the Bishop
of Rome, who is the Pope. The official name, in Latin, is
Archibasilica Sanctissimi Salvatoris et Sanctorum Iohannes Baptista
et Evangelista in Laterano, which translates in English:
Archbasilica of the Most Holy Saviour and Sts. John the Baptist and
the Evangelist at the Lateran. As the cathedral of the Bishop of
Rome, containing the papal throne (Cathedra Romana), it ranks above
all other churches in the Catholic Church, including St. Peter's
Basilica in the Vatican. For that reason, unlike all other Roman
Basilicas, it holds the title of Archbasilica. The cathedral itself
is located outside of the Vatican City boundaries, territorially
located within the city of Rome in the Italian Republic. However it
has been granted a special extraterritorial status as a property of

Die Lateranbasilika ist die Bischofskirche von Rom. Ihr voller Name
lautet: Archibasilica Sanctissimi Salvatoris et Sancti Iohannes
Baptista et Evangelista in Laterano (Erzbasilika des
Allerheiligsten Erlösers, des Heiligen Johannes des Täufers und des
Heiligen Johannes des Evangelisten im Lateran). San Giovanni im
Lateran ist die eigentliche Kathedrale von Rom, weil die Kirche der
Sitz des Bischofs von Rom (also des Papstes) ist. Die fünfschiffige
Säulenbasilika geht in ihrem Kern noch auf Konstantin im 4.
Jahrhundert zurück. Allerdings wurde die Kirche wiederholt umgebaut
und barockisiert. Der heutige Chor stammt aus dem Mittelalter, die
monumentale, mit Statuen gekrönte Fassade aus dem Barock. Wer mehr
