Baldy's Hair Plug!
Baldy stands as one the last mountains on the south end of the
Pioneer Range. Living up to its name, the last 800ft of elevation
are rock field. From its peak, you get impressive views of the
Beaverhead, Big Hole, Grasshopper, and Ruby areas (to name a few).
You also get a birds-eye view of the southern-end of the Pioneers
and a half-dozen high mountain lakes! The hike is worth it!
Begin at the parking area and head north up the ridge. Trail flags
(alternating green/pink) mark the trail you want to follow. Pay
attention! Trail will take you up to an intermediate saddle and
then over to switchbacks on the rock-face. Stick to the
switch-backs for a nice direct route. Beware the false
summit!
Pack plenty of water and some calories. Be sure to wear layers,
even in the summer. Everything above tree-line has a tendency to be
cold and windy!
The cache is a football-sized PVC container. Be sure to take the
time to sign and comment in the log-book. Give a few details about
your hike and the views. The log-book isn't going to fill up
quickly, so use a couple of lines!
