Geocache Description:

This is cache is placed near a spectacular building on the old edge of Melbourne's CBD, Southern Cross Station

Whilst Flinders Street Station will always have its iconic clocks, the old Spencer Street Station never really had the same appeal.

In 2002, work commenced on what was later to become Southern Cross Station, with the challenge to cover both the suburban and country line platforms with one contiguous roof. The result of this is a design, by Grimshaw Architects, featuring an unusual "wavy roof". As the station plays host to electric and diesel trains, the odd steam train, as well as a coach terminal underneath the northern end, it was important to ensure the design allowed for the natural funnelling of fumes away from the commuters and workers below. The roofs irregular waves are specifically designed to make best use of the prevailing winds to effectively enable the roof to 'breathe'. The roof is also used to harvest water, which is used for various purposes throughout the complex.

Whilst the design of the building has drawn great praise, including winning design awards, it has also drawn its critics. There have been a number of incidents, since the opening in 2006, where commuters have been injured, including one where a young woman fell from a walkway eight meters to the platform below. Commuters have also complained about the removal of pedestrian subways crossing Spencer St, meaning commuters all need to cross at street level to make their way into the CBD, both slowing them down and increasing travel time.

Now to the prize. This cache is located in a VERY exposed area, so retrieval will be difficult at the best of times. The difficulty reflects the need for possibly both stealth and shielding from muggles in this extremely high traffic area! You may be better waiting for a quieter period of the day.

Good Luck!
