Geocache Description:

An interesting, easily accessible site in the suburbs.

It’s a fantastic sight in the suburb of Szeged among the prefabricated high-rise block of flats and towers. Lake Blood (Vér-tó) got its name when there used to be a slaughterhouse next to it. Now the lake is normally green but you are not allowed to swim in it. However you can angle there. There is a kiosk where you can buy daily fishing tickets. The mound next to the lake is said to be a kurgan. So it is suposed to be a manmade hill, a burial site created in prehistoric times. (There are hundreds of mounds like this on the Hungarian Plane.) Some people say it is not a kurgan, but the lorries carried the unnecessary earth here when they built the blocks of flats. Whatever it is, this mound is used by children for sleighing in wintertime when we have snow. This is why the mound is called Szánkózó-domb or Bob Hill nowadays. But now the main attractions are the wooden Székely Gates and the other ancient Hungarian symbols on the hill. The Székely people are Hungarians living in the Eastern part of Transylvania. They are famous for their woodcraft, especially these gates. Some of them came to Szeged to demonstrate their skills and express our togetherness. You can admire not only these gates but also the so-called Life Tree, the Turul (a falcon-like saint bird) and the Table of Light. Have fun on the mound.
