Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, or otherwise known
as "Marquis de Lafayette", was major-general in the Continental
Army under George Washington during the American Revolution.
The radical men in France at this time loved the idea of the
"rights of man" and they wanted to help in the American fight for
freedom. Lafayette was one of these thinkers, and he disobeyed the
French king and came to America to help fight. The Continental
Congress at first did not want to welcome him into their army,
because they were "tired of French glory-seekers". It was then that
Lafayette said that he would work for no pay, and the Continental
Congress decided he would make a great major-general. Benjamin
Franklin wrote to George Washington and recommended Lafayette,
hoping that the French would send more aid later.
After the war here, he went back across the pond to his home in
France. He later participated in the French Revolution as a leader
of the Garde Nationale.
Lafayette Square and its plaque mark the place where Lafayette
stayed when he came to Bradford in 1825. His visit was part of his
tour of the United States from 1824-1825. President James Monroe
had invited Lafayette to help celebrate the country's 50th
anniversary. Lafayette visited all 24 states, traveling over 6,000
miles!!
Parking for the cache can be found 0.1 miles down the road at the
Bradford Community Center (see waypoint). I suggest here so you're
off the road, but feel free to park on the side of East Main St.
near the cache (but not in anyone's yard or driveway, please!) if
you're feeling adventurous. Do not attempt to park on Rt. 114
because it is too busy and not safe due to the almost blind
corner.
The cache is a bison tube. Bring your own pen/pencil. FTF gets the
luxury of a clean log.
Congrats to Team Yianni for FTF!
