This cache is located just on the fringe of the dark and
sinister Great Swamp, the largest wetland complex in RI. No swamp
here, just some transitional land dominated by Ninigret soil.
Ninigret soils are moderately well drained soils that formed in
glacial outwash. 14,000 - 18,000 years ago, Worden Pond and Great
Swamp were a shallow glacial lake. As the retreating glacier sat
further north at Wolf Rock in Exeter, torrents of water flowed
south, carrying sands and gravels. These sands and gravels formed a
delta into the glacial lake which was just a little further south
from this location.
Most areas of Ninigret soil are used for cultivated crops, hay,
or pasture. Common crops are silage corn, vegetables, tobacco, and
nursery stock. Some areas are idle, wooded, or used for community
development. Common trees are red, white and black oak, red maple,
sugar maple, white pine, gray birch, white ash, and hemlock. To get
to GZ start at the listed trailhead. Continue to the powerline
trail, and head south. Once at the end, head west. I've included an
additional trailhead for a short trail into the woods. Cache should
be an easy find just off the trail, although some light
bushwhacking will be required. CC is a duct-taped plastic container
with some swag and an official series description.
Congrats to Yawppy for the FTF!
