My father purchased this island in 1972 and sold most of it to the Cruise Ship company around 1990. We kept five acres and built the house you passed on the way here. You have reached the West End of the island, a mile walk from where you started. Congratulations! Imagine doing it if there were no road...
The beach just to your North is the only one on the island where you can walk out and shortly be in deep water. Therefore it is ideal for scuba diving and earned the name, "Scuba Beach". This is also the place where we first landed machinery. The deep water beach was ideal for a Landing Craft to "hit the beach". (The same kind of ship the Marines used in D-Day and Guadalcanal.) We were able to drive a bulldozer off our landing craft and starting from the beach we created the road you walked here on. We had no idea there were hills like the one you just walked down. At the other end of the island, where most of the passengers play, we were able to build a regular dock after pushing great piles of rock and sand into the water. If you go snorkeling here on Scuba Beach, you can still see a few long steel ramps which we used in the sand and shallow water to prevent getting stuck as we drove the heavy machinery in and out. Somehow the ramps got away from us! At least the fish seem to enjoy hiding under and schooling around them.
