Cache # 5
The cache is placed in the grounds of the Tarrawingee Cemetery. The entrance is wonderful - an old gate flanked by two huge oak trees. There is also a central avenue lined with gums, bottlebrushes and wattles. There are some very old headstones here and it is a very peaceful spot off the Beechworth-Wangaratta Road.
Tarrawingee is situated 11km SE of Wangaratta and its name is said to be Aboriginal for "Plenty of Water".
In the early days crossing of the Ovens River here was by punt.
The original pastoral run was called "Tarawingi" and was taken up in 1837 by William Bowman. He gave up the lease for a time because of trouble with the Aboriginals. The run consisting of 50,000 acres, was sold to Sir Francis Murphy in 1844. Sir Francis became the Speaker of Victoria's first Legislative Assembly. For more on this early Pioneer, click on the related web page (above).
Another interesting reference to William Bowman: http://home.vicnet.net.au/~pioneers/pppg5b.htm
The Plough Inn was built in 1864 and Ladson's General Store and house "Carinya" was built in 1860 on part of the original Tarawingi Run. It has a ballroom and extensive cellars and there are old stables at the back of the property.
