Geocache Description:

Another hike to a pretty spot in the Markworth state forest.

While rousting around in the eastern part of the Markworth forest, I stopped at a pretty little stream to cool my feet. Looking upstream from the road bridge, I spotted an interesting looking structure spanning the creek.

Further investigation of this cast-concrete dam/weir structure lead me to think it's an (now abandoned) entry weir for an old logging flume. At least, the V-shape is right and the downstream face of the structure includes a line of studs that could have been used to fasten the flume to the concrete.

If you want to take a closer look at the dam, take a couple words of advice: use the north (left side looking upstream) bank to approach. The square-shaped landing structure downstream of the weir face has a hollow structure, be careful where you step; the north side of the weir itself also has some hollows with some rotten looking wood covering them. Nothing that would trap or even severely harm a typical adult human, but could give you a surprise dunking.

I would have posted pictures, but forgot my camera. Please feel free to post your photos (I think it might be cool to see how the flow through this creek looks at different times of the year). Also, anybody with information about this structure and its history is welcome to post it, or email along to me.

Update 3/1/2013 - akitahikers got a chance to ask the forester for this area about the structure, see their post below. Apparently this is an abandoned fish weir - but why they would build a weir to run fish down a flume is beyond me.

Cache is a approx. 12x8x6 lock-n-lock. Coordinates averaged for 15 minutes with a Garmin GPS 76, which reported an error of ~10 ft.
