Geocache Description:

Near a WW2 anti-tank defence installation- the only one known to still exist in Tasmania. Park near the intersection and walk the short distance down to the concrete pillar.

After visiting CatWomanAU's geocache "The Japs are coming" I remembered that this location existed and thought it would be a nice sequal.

The cache is near a little known anti-tank line that was part of Tasmania’s response to the threat of invasion by the Japanese during the Second World War. This threat intensified after the bombing of Pearl Harbour in December 1941, the Japanese onslaught into the Pacific and the bombing of Australia’s northern towns. In 1942 a Japanese reconnaissance flight was made over Hobart, launched from a submarine hidden in Great Oyster Bay (near Freycinet Peninsula).

These Dragon’s Teeth are the only ones known to still exist in Tasmania, although documentary evidence suggests that others were constructed throughout the State. Huon Road was the main approach to Hobart from the south during the war period.

Few people know about this structure, apart from the many residents who drive through it everyday and probably don’t realise what it is!
