The dunes of Corralejo are an interesting phenomenon; world famous, something very different, unusual and well worth exploring. They are formed by sand blowing over from the African Sahara Desert on a wind which locals call a “Calima.”
So the good news is you don’t have to go to the Sahara or any of the Arab countries to see some desert scenery. They’re having a bit of bother out there right now, but here you can get the same sun, same sand and dunes in peace, quiet and solitude.
So many people who visit the dunes south of Corralejo park by the roadside, walk 50 or 100 meters up the nearest dune, take a photograph, usually with arms wide Titanic style, and then go back to the car. Very nice, good fun, different of course, but with a bit of effort, the desert experience can be so much more...........plus you get to pick up a few caches whilst you’re at it!!
This Deserted Tree cache can be done alone in a total of 40 - 50 minutes steady walking and total distance 2.20 miles/3.6Km; or you can combine it with GC33H6B Deserted Rock, total time 70 - 90 minutes and total distance 2.7 miles/4.35Km; you might then as well add on GC34D15 Deserted Bush on the way back to the car in the same total time of 70 - 90 minutes and total distance 2.7 miles/4.35Km. That’s really good.
Either way, you might want to finish off the experience by relaxing on Playa Alzada right next to where you park the car. Bonus is men can fantasise about the women and women can fantasise about the lifeguards!!
You are looking for a small green bison cylinder with log inside. Bring your own pen or pencil.
Terrain is mostly firm sand, some soft sand and, believe it or not, a few dunes. No special footwear is needed; it never gets muddy; I do it barefoot, but flip flops or sandals are fine as well.
A good time to do this is early morning or late afternoon, but whatever or whenever you decide, do take something to drink and do use sun screen and head protection just to be safe here.
You are in Fuerteventura so casual wear, beach wear, no wear, or as bare as you dare are all fine and can enhance your exhilarating time in the desert. Just enjoy the freedom and the quiet in this beautiful place. The only locals you might meet are discreet goats!!
