Why is this place so special one?
In times of the ending of the Miocene epoch the Pannon-sea spreaded in the whole Carpathian basin. This sea was connected to the remainders of the Tethys ocean by a narrow soun and the salty seawater gradually thinnered and got fresh water. Later the soun closed and the giant Pannon-lake came into existence. This lake was filled totally up with the sandy-clayey alluvian deposits of the rivers (about 5 million years ago). The thickness of the deposits is a whole kilometer here and there.
This filled up plain was lifted by earth’s crust movements and the surface was covered with 10…30 m loess layer. Later hills were formed from this table-land by erosion. This is the past of Zselic hilly country. People think there is no stone in 1200 sqr kilometer Zselic, and they are almost right, but you can find a little few places where sandstone layers came into existence in the Miocene deposits. This place is the one of those.
