Les moulins étaient nombreux au début 19° siècle.
On en comptait près d'une dizaine aux alentours : Monchêne, Royer, la Pointe, Claveau, de la Grimaudière, Pépin, des Bordes, Turban, Bout Filan, Boyetet, Duchon.
Tous furent détruits entre 1815 et 1907.
Celui-ci date de 1849, la date est gravée au dessus d'une fenêtre en demi-cercle et s'est arrêté de moudre en 1902.
Pour l'époque il présente un système innovant : le système Berton.Il permet de commander l'ouverture et la fermeture des ailes, ainsi que l'orientation pour prendre le vent depuis l'intérieur du moulin.
La tour mesure 16 m de haut, ses ailes ont une envergure de 21,40 m et peuvent atteindre une vitesse de 8 tours par minute, elles entraînent une meule d’une tonne à 80 tours par minute capable de produire 100 kg de farine.
Inscrit aux Monuments Historiques depuis le 24 mai 1974, il a subi une véritable restauration par l'association des amis du moulin d'Artenay en 1979 pour pouvoir être pleinement opérationnel. Une nouvelle tranche de restauration démarre en 2011.
Visites d'avril à septembre, le troisième dimanche du mois de 14h à 18h30 et sur rendez vous toute l'année (02-38-80-09-03).
