The Levada dos
Tornos is one of the longest levadas on Madeira. Maybe some of you
know it because it also appears above Funchal in Corujeira/Monte
and goes to Camacha and even to Santo da Serra. But its origin, its
"Madre" is at a total distant corner of Madeira.
You need a car
because it's quite difficult to go with the bus to the starting
point of your hike. The name of that small village is "Lombo do
Urzal". To get there, you take the ER101 from Arco de São Jorge to
Boaventura. At N 32º 48.313 W 016º 58.003 you follow the small road
into the valley of the "Ribeira do Porco" which is later called
"Ribeira do Urzal". When the road crosses the bridge it's time to
park the car (reference point). Follow a steep concrete road up to
the end in front of a small house. There look for a trail which
lead you up between fields to the levada. The altitude between the
parking place and the levada is round about 200 m. Arriving at the
levada turn right, against flow direction.
That levada lead you in dense Laurisilva forests. You have to
cross several creeks till you reach the cache. The absence of any
guard railings makes that levada so origin but also dangerous. You
have to be free of vertigo! The cache is hidden before the very end
of the levada because between the cache place and the end is a very
dangerous part. Only go there if you are experienced to go on
narrow walls.
If you enjoy that area and there's plenty of
time, you can pass on your way back that trail you came up and
follow the levada in flow direction. You will be also impressed
about the nature there. Another alternative might be to go back to
the car and go for the caches "Encontro - Meeting Point" and
"Ribeira Grande", which are not very far away. But then your day is
filled.
Be aware that you are at the north coast and the weather can
change quickly. Always take proper wear and boots with you. We took
great care in hiding the cache. Please leave its area as you found

A Levada dos Tornos é uma das levadas mais longe na Madeira.
Talvez sabes a pourque ela aparece também em cima do Funchal em
Corujeira/Monte e segue pela Camacha e mesmo até Santo da
Serra.
Precisas um carro pourque é difícil andar de autocarro até ao
ponto da partida do teu passeio. O nome da aldeia é "Lombo do
Urzal". Para chegar lá vais a ER101 de Arco de São Jorge até
Boaventura. Às N 32º 48.313 W 016º 58.003 segues a pequena rua
dentro do vale da Ribeira do Porco que chama-se mais tarde "Ribeira
do Urzal". Quando vais pelo ponte é tempo para estacionar (Ponto do
referência). Segues uma rua muita aclive até ao fim em frente de
uma casa. Procuras uma travessa pelos jardins subindo até à levada.
A diferença da altura entre o estacionamento e a levada é mais ou
menos 200 metros. Chegando à levada viras-te à direita contra a
corrente.
A levada levas-te na floresta Laurisilva da Madeira. Tens que
atravessar algumas ribeiras até a cache. A ausência de toda
corrimão faz esta levada muito original mas também muito perigoso.
Não deves sofrer de vertigens e medo dos abismos. A cache está
escondido antes do fim da levada porque entre a GZ e o fim há um
lugar muito perigoso. Só vai quando estás versado andar em cima dos
mouros estreitos.
Devirtes-te.
Quando gostas a floresta e quando há bastante tempo podes
passear na tua volta o ponto da descida e segues a levada. O
ambiente vai continuar ser muito impressionante. Uma alternativa
seria voltar ao carro e procurar as caches "Encontro - Meeting
Point" e "Ribeira Grande" que estão não muito distante. Neste caso
o dia é ocupado.
Cuida-te porque estás no norte da ilha e o tempo pode mudar
muito rápido. Sempre leva vestidos apropriados contigo e também
sapatos de montanha. Cuidamo-nos muito em esconder a cache. Por
favor sai do lugar em mesmo estado como encontraste o.
