This cache is near a small, secluded cemetery in Meredith NH off Chemung Rd. The Laconia State Cemetery was established for the burial of residents of the Laconia State School (1900-1991). The cemetery opened in 1941. The school was originally named the NH School for the Feebleminded. This institution was where people who were branded as disabled and stigmatized deficient, feebleminded and dangerous to society were subjected to live a life of isolation and segregation. Our Downes Syndrome sister lived at the school for 6 years until she passed away at the age of 14. Thankfully, the world has come a long way with the treatment of the mentally ill. After finding the cache and signing the log, if you're old enough to remember the Ballard of Davy Crockett, say or sing a verse (optional, of course)as you walk or drive past the cemetery. Our sister loved it and used to sing along with us. (She'd say Davy Kuck-i, hence, the cache name). I'm sure she'll be singing right along with you in heaven.
