This is a multi-stage cache that will take you on a tour of the
heart of the UNC Chapel Hill campus. If you are careful in
following the instructions, you should have no trouble finding the
cache. Trails are campus sidewalks up until the last several
hundred feet. Total distance covered should be less than 2 miles
(including return to starting point). Final cache is very close to
a few other Tar Heel caches, so plan on staying for a bit ;)
Before you begin, you may want to enter a waypoint for where your
car is parked, to help you on your return if you're not familiar
with Chapel Hill. If you park on the street, make sure you feed the
meters, or the meter police will invariably find you.
2/19/02 Update: I've tweaked the Stage 3 coordinates with the
results of a more accurate (hopefully) fix.
To start, head for the following coordinates:
Stage 1 coordinates
N 35° 54.781'
W 79° 03.112'
This will put you on the 'quad,' surrounded by the 200+ year old
original buildings of the UNC campus, and under massive trees that
must be even older. Nearby is the famous Davie Poplar (still
hanging in there despite Fran's best efforts). But what we're
interested in is the monument to Joseph Caldwell, the university's
first president.
President Caldwell:
- was born on April 2A, 1773
- died January 2B, 1835
Fill in the 'blanks' using the actual dates on the monument, and
plug them into the coordinates below to find where to go
next.
Stage 2 coordinates
N 35° 54.B23'
W 79° 03.(A-1)79'
To clarify for the longitude: subtract one from the value of the
digit represented by A to calculate the first digit
after the decimal point in the minutes of longitude.
Head for the resulting location, and you'll recognize another
famous UNC landmark. Note the year of the class which donated the
pair of resting places on the perimeter, and determine the
following:
19CD
Plug the appropriate values for C and D into the coordinates
below.
Stage 3 coordinates
N 35° 54.(C+1)51'
W 79° 02.6(D+1)2'
Go to this last intermediate point, and locate the momument for a
famous North Carolinian born on September 10.
His wife:
- was born on April 1E
- died on October 2F
Stage 4 coordinates
N 35° 54.8(F-4)1'
W 79° 02.(E+1)63'
You're on your way to the cache. It's an ammobox. Please rehide
well, it has the potential of being VEEERY visible to
passersby!
Enjoy!
