RIPPLEBROOK CEMETERY, (formerly Longwarry South and Yannathan Cemetery)
Most historic towns and villages have a cemetery worth exploring and many larger cities have graveyards reserved for the powerful, rich and famous (or infamous!) This well kept little cemetery is not all that remarkable except for the harsh reminder of the hard ships our early pioneers had to endure.
The first burial occurred in here 1879, the cemetery was gazetted and a trust appointed in 1892, and it appears that the last burial was c1914.
It has only one grave stone has a marker on it, and the grave site still looks well cared for, the rest having been lost to the ravages of time.
The site does have a large memorial stone which was erected in 2008 which contains a Plaque with the names of all the known burials at the Cemetery.
Of the 32 known people buried here 24 were less than 17 years old and 19 of those were less than 4 years old.
As a parent, it was hard to read the names of the many children buried there or to understand how difficult it must have been for families in those times, to lose one and for some more children so young.
Please be careful when retrieving and replacing the container.
We intended to place a regular sized cache here but there was nowhere to respectfully place it near the plaque.
While looking for this cache, take a moment to think how lucky we really are.
