It was a
wonderful day about seven years ago when a little web research
showed that there had been a new type of dog recently developed in
Australia and a similar type in the United States. They are
sometimes called Aussiedoodles. Since our kids were all married and
living out-of-state, I guess we just wanted the patter of little
feet around. Little did we realize that those adorable little puppy
feet would grow to belong to two 75-pound
Goldendoodles!
Labradoodles were first bred by the Australian
Guide Dog Association in 1989 as an allergy-friendly seeing-eye
dog. They get their name from their mixed heritage – Labrador
Retriever and Poodle. Their popularity as healthy family pets
spilled into North America during the late 1990s.
The
Goldendoodle also gets its name from its mixed heritage - Golden
Retriever and Poodle. Goldendoodles are hybrid dogs, a
first-generation-cross, and as such they exhibit "hybrid vigor",
the term used to describe the burst of fertility, good health and
growth that is seen in the progeny when two unrelated breeds are
mated.
The
hybrid-cross between these parent breeds are terrific family dogs,
friendly, intelligent, affectionate and easy to train. Many poodle
crosses inherit the fur/hair qualities of the poodle, but not the
texture. This means that most don't shed, or shed lightly, and may
not produce an allergic reaction. The Doodle can inherit fur/hair
which looks retriever-like, or poodle-like, but usually something
in-between.
The size of
the Dood depends on its parentage. Breeders often offer Standard
(45 lbs or more), Medium (30-45 lbs) and/or Miniature (15-30 lbs).
A general rule of thumb is to add both the parents’ weights
together and divide by 2 to get an average adult weight on the
puppies. Some Standards have grown to over 100 pounds. Doods come
in many colors, from white to black. Our two are
“champagne” colored.
