Komondor
The Komondor (Hungarian plural
komondorok) is a large, white-colored Hungarian breed of livestock
guardian dog with a long, corded coat.
Sometimes referred to as 'mop dogs,'
the Komondor is a long-established, powerful dog breed that has a
natural guardian instinct to guard livestock and other property.
The Komondor was brought to Europe by the Cumans and it was
mentioned for the first time in 1544 in a Hungarian codex. The
Komondor breed has been declared one of Hungary’s national
treasures, to be preserved and protected from
modification.
The name Komondor derives from
Koman-dor, meaning "dog of the Cumans." The breed descends from
Tibetian dogs and came from Asia with the Cumans, whose homeland
was near the Yellow River. In the late 10th century, Mongols began
to expand their territories in the expense of the Cumans, forcing
the Cumans to move west. Fleeing from the Mongols, they reached the
borders of Hungary in the 12th century. Cumans were granted asylum
and settled in Hungary in 1239 under Köten Khan. Komondor remains
have been found in Cuman gravesites.
Did you know?
The Komondor is one of three breeds
of working dog native for ten centuries to the sheep and cattle
countries of Hungary.
The Komondor is an almost direct descendent of the Aftscharka,
which the Huns found on the southern steppes when they passed
through Russian.
The plural of Komondor is Komondorok.
The Komondor is chief of the herdsmen dogs, but not often utilized
for rounding up the herds; merely accompanies the flocks and herds
in exceptional cases, acting as more of a protector than
herder.
Failure of the coat to cord by two years of age is a
disqualification in the Komondor breed.
Descended from Tibetan dogs, the Komondor was brought to Hungary a
thousand years ago by nomadic Magyars.
