Geocache Description:

Great views from this point, be on the watch for Eiders!

"The tip of Naskeag Point in Brooklin thrusts into the waters of Blue Hill Bay to the east and Eggemoggin Reach on the south. Harbor Island is only a stones throw away from the beach at low tide and the enclosed area has always provided good anchorage. There is a little park overlooking the harbor with three monuments. The oldest monument was erected in 1976 to honor the re-enactment of the Revolutionary War Battle of Naskeag which occured in 1778.
The conflict is said to have begun in April, 1778, when Moses Reed fired his musket into an English Barge passing close to Naskag Point, killing one of the men. The British withdrew, but vowed to return, blaming the incident on the entire Naskeag settlement Plantation #4 (which then comprised the territory that would become the towns of Sedgwick, Brooksville, and Brooklin). Tories blamed the killing in particular on the local elected militia captain, Will Reed.

On the morning of July 20th, word came from Deer Island that two British sloops of war were seen coming up the coast from Castine, the base of English fortifications during the Revolutionary War. The British landed over sixty men. Facing them were seven American militiamen led by Captain Reed. The Americans resisted, but were forced to withdraw. As the British advanced they burned buildings and plundered livestock."
