Geocache Description:

Cache is a small plastic container, near the end of a short side-trail off of the Steep Hollow Trail in Foothills Park. The climb is approximately 100 feet from the start of Steep Hollow Trail.

The California Bay Laurel tree grows natively through a wide range of California and Oregon. The tree is characterized by fragrant, narrow leaves which are sometimes used as a seasoning in recipes. The tree also produces a nutty fruit which was a source of food for Native Americans.

California Bay Laurel often grow in clusters of tall, arching trunks. Fallen leaves cover the forest floor, creating natural clearings. The location of this cache is a particularly beautiful example of such a cluster. The high, graceful arches of the trees and the leafy carpet carve out a cathedral-like open space, in sharp contrast to the dense undergrowth of the surrounding area. When the sun is bright and high, shafts of light pierce through the green roof, illuminating the air around you.

The cache contains a log book, pencil, and trinkets. Foothills Park is open to vehicle access only to Palo Alto residents and their guests. The cache is located 0.3 miles from the parking lot at the main picnic area.

The nearest public access to the park is from the Pearson-Arastradero Preserve parking lot (1530 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto) -- approximately a 3.5 mile hike along the Arastradero Creek Trail.
