Geocaching 170: A Letterbox (Auckland) Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

TheCur8or: As this cache has been out of action for too long, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Another type of cache: A Letterbox!

Me and a friend were once exploring the area, and found many old trails in the back of the beaches between Mission Bay and St Heliers. Found a perfect spot for the cache, but unfortunately, we then lost where the spot had been! But found this little old path, which was even better!

The terrain around is slippery, and is pretty much a no-no in heavy rain.
There are two ways to access the cache: The first is down the old path, which has now overgrown. Entry is at S 36 50.766 E 174 52.144. You should be able to see the stairs leading down by peering through the bushes. If you don't find the trail, DON'T go down to the cache this way!! The ground is unstable if you try to go down elsewhere from along the park! (And there are signs telling you so too, and trust me, they are not joking!)
The second entry can be accessed only by low tide, unless you want to be swimming! Take the stairs down, at either Ladies Bay, or Karaka Bay, and then walk around the beach till you reach S 36 50.730 E 174 52.189, where you can begin your ascent. This way is easier, to preserve GPS signal!

The cache is a letterbox, so it contains a Geocaching logbook with pen, but also a stamp, stamp pad, and a letter-boxing stamp book.

If the GPS reception keeps falling out, which it will, refer to the hint! You should be able to remain on the path right up to the cache! So the bush bashing isn't too bad. Please make sure you close the container well when leaving, and cover back up well, so it won't be seen, and the rain won't wash it away!
It's a 2L, black spray-painted container.
On a nice day, terrain rating would be about 2.5, on a nasty wet day though, or if you don't find the path, it can get up to about a 4.

Good Luck!

And if you are doing these courses as part of your degree, as oppose to general interest, make sure to note the code in the lid of the container, to be able to gain entry into the final course!
If you have logged this, or any other cache in the series as found, prior to the 12th January 2012, you can either return to the cache to collect the number, or email the CO with the caches you have found, requesting the numbers.
