Nasceu no séc. XIV O Estreito da Calheta é uma freguesia do concelho da Calheta.O Estreito da Calheta tem uma escola, um parque industrial, uma pousada de juventude, um centro cívico, uma centro de saúde, um banco e várias residenciais e hotéis. A primitiva povoação teve a sua origem numa fazenda concedida no séc. XV ao fidalgo, natural da Polónia, André Gonçalves de Franças. Foi seu filho, João de França, que fez construir a capela de Nossa Senhora da Graça, em que depois se criou e instalou a nova paróquia, sendo também a sede do morgadio que fundou em 1503. A denominação de Estreito (desfiladeiro, vale ou profundidade), possivelmente teve origem num pequeno sítio, com maior ou menor propriedade de aplicação do termo, embora no seu conjunto, as condições orográficas não justifiquem tal denominação.
