Geocache Description:

Located in the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens. A nice pleasant area that is heritage listed.

The Castlemaine Botanic Gardens were gazetted on 21 February 1860 and are believed to have been designed by the first curator Phillip Doran (1830-1913) who occupied this position for 47 years. The main entrance is through an impressive set of cast iron gates (SE end of gardens) erected in 1877-78 by local engineering firm Thompson & Co and completed by local monumental mason George Redfearn. At the same time a decorative fountain was erected near the gates, and a year later Lake Joanna with its naturalistic island was officially completed.

The Gardens are historically important as one of Victoria's oldest regional botanic gardens. The scale of these major gardens and degree of plant specialisation reflect Castlemaine's gold rush prosperity and the local community's desire to draw attention to their success and accomplishments. The gardens have an outstanding collection of mature trees, including a preponderance of conifers, many of which are rare in cultivation and the finest of their species in Victoria. The significant plantings include an English Oak that is one of the oldest known cultivated trees in Victoria. The gardens are on the Victorian Heritage Register.

During 2011, the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens underwent a $2.5 million Enhancement Program. The lake has been reconstructed and a new playground completed. There is a walking path around the interior of the gardens – please ensure you take the walk which is flat and involves about 20 minutes for the full circuit. Also a great picnic spot!

The Botanical Troll is a geocache posted by Jejon who live in Castlemaine. When you find it – you will know why we have called it the Botanical Troll. It is a fair to high muggle area. Container is a well hidden 300 mL black plastic bottle with book, pen but no swaps. You can park at any of the perimeter car parks and walk through the gardens to the GZ. Enjoy your visit.
Please do not leave trackables. Replace carefully - check there are no muggles around.
