Katy Trail 174 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Glenn Rice: This cache -- until now the 10th oldest in the state of Missouri -- is now dead [xx(], due to its permit not being renewed. Thanks to all the folks that have visited it over the last five years. This has always been my favorite cache of the ones I've placed, because it was so deceptive: On the map, it looked like it should be easily accessible from a nearby road, but in reality it was almost 4 miles from the nearest access point. It was also a cyclist-friendly cache -- not too many of those around.

I understand the need for permits for caches in state parks, and I appreciate Mr Gast's tolerance/support of geocaching in his jurisdiction, but I do think that the permit procedure should accommodate caches like this one that are very seldom visited by cachers. This cache is also very close to a heavily travelled multi-use trail, which has far greater impact on the surrounding area than any cache would.

Geocache Description:

Cache is located between mile markers 174 and 175 on the Katy Trail near Rocheport. MO.

Cache is a green metal ammo box.

Note that the location of the cache made it difficult to get a good view of the sky. You'll understand why if you visit the cache. The only difficulty is at the end of the hunt, where some steep scrambling will be required.

The nearest auto access is at Rocheport. The cache is 3.75 miles south of the Rocheport trail parking area. A bicycle is highly recommended! There are bikes for rent in Rocheport. Evidently the bike rental place is closed on Mondays.

You can get to within a quarter mile of the cache on auto roads, but you won't be able to reach the cache that way.

Lewis & Clark cave and spring, well worth a stop, is a mere 0.2 miles south of the cache. Look about 25 feet above the cave to see some red pictographs.
