More than half a century ago, like in the late 40s, the hills to the east were covered with berry vines, blackberries or maybe Ollie berries. A couple summers I, as many kids than did, picked those dang things, to earn money for school clothes. Those was the days before fast-food joints, where youngsters often work today. Our parents made sure we had jobs, perhaps through necessity. And it kept us out of mischief. Amazing how things change, like today they say there is no one around that will do that work. Then, there was no problem. We felt fortunate to have the job. For sure the experience made me realize I needed to do something with my life so that I wouldn't have to do such work for my livelihood.
