Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

This is a virtual cache at an obvious attraction in an isolated location. Best viewed at NIGHT!

Note: The posted coordinates have been updated based on recent posts, but the cache location will continue to change.

Finding this cache will require visiting a certain National Park ($10 entrance fee). It will require a round trip hike of indeterminate length due to the nature and changing location of the cache. The original coordinates were N19° 18.866' / W155° 03.029'. Please read recent logs for the most up-to-date information because the cache has already moved several miles.

If the lava is flowing, you should plan to arrive at the parking area with sufficient time to hike out to it before sundown. To claim your "Found it!", get as close as safely possible to an active flow and note the coordinates; then post them here in your log entry. If you have a camera, a photo of the flow would also be appreciated.

If the lava is not flowing, you may alternately earn credit for finding this cache by posting a picture here of yourself with your GPSr at one of the "End of Trail" signs. The locations of the signs can also move, but the most recent known locations are: N19° 17.929' / W155° 05.278' and N19° 18.134' / W155° 05.152'.

For your safety, you MUST wear shoes (no flip flops) and take plenty of water for the hike (there is no shade) and a flashlight for the return hike.

Hmm. Looking forward to seeing the lava, and the lava flowing into the water, we were honestly a bit disappointed that mother nature was taking a break. Coming in from the Kalapana side, we were able to get to the standard viewing site (@ 19 20.485 155 00.204) but were only able to see what a local described as "sky lights" of lava glow - not the raging lava flow we were looking for. But, the chance to walk on 4 month old lava was still pretty cool... :)

I posted found it, but maybe I didn't. I walked for some distance over lava and never found the end of trail sign. I eventually saw hot lava from a helicopter. A terrific experience. Thanks.

Photo Looking For Hot Rox

January 26 by tucsonwildkat (1700 found)

As I log this three days after the hike, my legs/calves are still sore! I have hiked some pretty rough terreign, but this has turned out to be one of the hardest on my legs. We hiked three miles in (roughly) and you have to watch every step and its up and down lava...no complaints though-it was fun!! The closest coords we got are posted in Tucson Coyotes log. We had heard that the lava tube had collapsed near the sea and so there was no active flow into the ocean. We were hopeful that maybe there would be a little visible at night. The only red we saw was up the mountain. We decided not to go any further and hiked the three miles out. Kinda scary in the dark, thinking there is lava somewhere beneith this main field and could pop up anywhere she feels like. Thanks for bringing us here!

Photo pic for hot rox

January 26 by Tucson Coyotes (2071 found)

I hiked in with tucsonwildkat from the road on the Hawaii Volcanos National Park side in hopes of seeing an active flow reaching the sea. Approximately 2 miles in, we passed stacked signs and rope normally setup to mark the end of trail and keep hikers safe. We continued in over another mile and were well south of the only active hot spot we could see in the night skies. We stopped at N19 18.870 x W155 03.376 and took a photo of the lava far away (photo is poor quality). The next morning, we overflew the area thanks to Blue Hawaiian Helicopters and got a closer look at the lava we observed the night before. As of this date, the flow is not reaching the coastline. We enjoyed the journey and challenging night hike. Thanks!
