Geocache Description:

Special logging requirements for this extraterrestrial challenge. This cache is placed with permission of the Discovery Center.

"We choose to go to the Moon. We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

This speech by President Kennedy in the summer of 1962 is one of the most inspirational I have ever watched, and so aptly captures the courage, daring and commitment of the US Space Program. I watch it often when I need motivation to take on especially daunting challenges. Regrettably I'm not sure the present commitment to space will put me in a position to geocache on the moon (I suspect a new set of ratings would be needed, and nanos would be out of the question given those "fat finger" astronaut gloves).

Perhaps the next best thing is to rack up enough caching miles to cover the distance from the Earth to the Moon and of course a safe trip home, a daunting total of 477,670 miles. Unfortunately there's no easy way to add up all your caching miles on the geocaching "Your Statistics" page, so I suggest the following (gross) estimate.

1. For each range in the bar graph below (which is located at the bottom of "Your Statistics"), multiple the number of finds by the distance representing the bottom of that range.

2. Add the total from each range listed for a caching mileage total.

In my example below the total would be as follows: (0 miles x 10 finds)+(1 mile x 678 finds)+(10 miles X 780 finds)+...+(5000 miles x 2 finds)+(7500 miles x 94 finds) = 1,935,703 miles!

To log this cache

1. Start traveling - I'm not sure how hard this will be for others to achieve, but I travel ALOT and have cached in 12 countries. I suspect it may take quite a few NH caches to reach the same distance.

2. Visit the above coordinates and locate the cache hidden at the site of the Mercury Redstone rocket replica.

3. Estimate your total caching distance to confirm you can reach the moon and get back, and include your mileage total in your online log.
