The story

Icon painters are amazing people. Because they create things that not belong to material world, a "windows to the other world" (thanks, Dionisiy :).

This cache is dedicated to St. Andrey Rublyov, one of the greatest medieval Russian painters of Orthodox icons and frescoes.

There is little information about his life. It is not known where and when exactly he was born and who was his teacher in painting. Most researchers suppose he was born in 1360. First mention of Andrey Rublyov as a painter comes from Troitskaya Chronicle. It says that in 1405 he was helping Theophanes the Greek to paint icons in home church of grand duke Vasiliy Dmitrievich, elder son of Dmitry Donskoy, thus characterise Andrey as rather recognized and competent master.

The most well-known masterpiece of Andrey Rublyov is the icon of the Trinity, ca. 1410 (currently in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow). It is based upon an earlier icon known as the "Hospitality of Abraham" (illustrating Genesis 18). Rublev removed the figures of Abraham and Sarah from the scene, and through a subtle use of composition and symbolism changed the subject to focus on the Mystery of the Trinity.

In Rublev's art two traditions are combined: the highest asceticism and the classic harmony of Byzantine mannerism. The characters of his paintings are always peaceful and calm. After some time his art came to be perceived as the ideal of Church painting and of Orthodox iconography.

Coordinates of the cache will lead you near Andronikov Monastery. You may go inside (11am to 5:30pm daily) and enjoy the white-stone Saviour Cathedral, painted by St. Andrey. When I came to this monastery for the first time, I really felt a brightnes and warmth of very high spirit of the place.
