Michael the Archangel

Capela de São Miguel-o-Anjo

A Capela de São Miguel-o-Anjo está localizada na freguesia de Maximinos. Foi originalmente construída no início do século XVIII, na zona das Carvalheiras, perto da Sé de Braga e era o local onde os arcebispos se paramentavam para fazer a sua entrada solene na Sé.

Com o traçado de novos arruamentos, no início do século XIX, a capela ficou num cruzamento de ruas e surgiu a ideia de a deslocalizar. A opção tomada foi para o Bairro da Cruz de Pedra, perto da "futura" Estação dos Caminhos de Ferro. A cidade estava em franco desenvolvimento para esta zona e era preciso um templo que prestasse apoio moral e religioso aos novos moradores. Também se considerou que perto da estação de comboios deveria existir uma igreja, onde os viajantes pudessem rezar e pedir protecção, antes ou depois das viagens.

Chapel of Saint Michael-the-Angel

The Chapel of Saint Michael-the-Angel is locate in the parish of Maximinos in Braga. It was originarly built in the beginning of the 18th century, in the area of Carvalheiras, near Braga's Cathedral (Sé de Braga) and it was the place where the priests prepared themselves before their solemn entrance in the Cathedral.

With the layout of new streets in the early 19th century, the chapel location became a crossroads and it was suggested to relocat it. It was decided that it should be moved to the new neighborhood of Cruz de Pedra, close to the "future" Train Station. The town was developing fast in this area and needed a temple to provide moral and religious support to the residents. I was also considered that there should be a church near the train station where travelers could pray and ask for protection before or after travel.

On the first waypoint (N 41° 32.966 W 008° 25.769), you can see that the name of the street still reminds the original location of the chapel. Look around and search the tile painel below. Which is the number (A) under the tile painel?
