Geocache Description:

I have wanted to place a letterbox hybrid for quite some time. But I also wanted to do it right and have it cross listed on a letterbox site. This one is listed on Letterboxing North America as Lion and Indian.

Letterbox or Geocache
You have a choice to either follow the letterboxing instructions listed below or find it like a geocache by solving the geocache puzzled outlined below that. Even if you are not a letterboxer please consider using the letterbox clues to find the box.

Letterbox Instructions:
  • On November 5, 1640 a committee of seven was appointed by Charlestown to determine the boundary lines of the new settlement.
  • On October 7, 1642 an act of incorporation read: "Charlestowne Village is called Wooborne'.
  • In that area was a mighty pond which the Algonquin Indians called Initou which was overshadowed by Mt. Towanda.
  • In the 1900’s and on up to the 1960’s there was a beach often frequented by travelers from Boston.
  • Although one can no longer drive on the Woburn Parkway walking is very much allowed and done all year round.
  • Where the parking lot for the beach once resided now there is a park presided over by a lion.
  • Find that lion and follow his gaze for 333 feet and you will come to a spot where the mighty Chief Winitihooloo once stood.
  • From there continue southerly along the manmade path for 554 feet until you come to a left turn leading onto the peninsula.
  • Back up about 30 feet and take a small dirt trail on the opposite side over a little hill into the woods.
  • Follow the trail to the point where it changes from a heading close to North-Northwesterly to a heading close to Westerly.
  • Rather than turn and follow the trail continue straight into the woods as if the trail did go straight for about 60-70 more feet.
  • At that point turn to an East-Northeasterly heading and proceed 40 feet up a small hill.
  • At the top you will find a tall and straight oak tree and a small and crooked black tree. Perhaps walnut, perhaps cherry.
  • Look at the wood by the tree for the box you seek.

Geocache instructions:
To find this as a geocache you need do some projections:
  • Southwest of the posted coordinates (at 205 degrees) is a former beach parking lot now called Lions Park. Go there and find the lion in that park.
  • From that lion follow his gaze for 333 feet and you will come to a spot where the mighty Chief Winitihooloo once stood. (Seems to me the lion is looking due east.)
  • From Chief Winitihooloo’s former location project a point 325 Feet at 188 degrees. That is where you find the cache.

Good luck and good caching,

Loch Cache
