The geocache is a plastic box near the road which passes by the monument of the battle.
The monument can be found within the boundaries of the nearby motocross field. It does not contain anything of interest and the geocache is located outside the fence, therefore I recommend that you view the monument from outside the fence. The monument isn’t well known, even to the locals, and that is why I wanted to call attention to it with this geocache.
History:
After the Mongol invasion of Europe, Bela IV settled Cumans into the Great Hungarian Plain. The cumans helped him and his descendants to victory multiple times. Their integration into the Christian Hungary, however, was the result of a long process, filled with conflict. The cousin of Bela IV, Laszlo IV, born to a cuman mother, fought and defeated the cumans in 1822 at the battle of Hód Lake due to pressure from the Hungarian lords
The battle was fought between the Hungarian army, led by (Cuman) Laszlo IV (1272 – 90), and the cumans who were pillaging eastern Hungary and rebelling to protect their nomadic and pagan lifestyle, led by Oldamur. The battle was fought in the March/May of 1282 beside Hod Lake. It ended with a decisive Hungarian victory, which was helped by the rain during the battle, which made the cumans’ bows unusable. The names of Amade Aba and Roland, son of Thomas, are mentioned in connection with the battle. The Szekely people also fought in the Hungarian army. After the battle, some of the cumans escaped from Hungary, the rest submitted. The cumans that refused to submit went to the Mongols and returned with them in the February and March of 1285. This Mongol campaign came to be known as the second Mongol invasion by Hungarians. The battle of Hod Lake was fought near to where the town of Hódmezővásárhely is today.
A yurt-shaped, cupola-like, originally red (now slightly faded) building stands as a memorial to this battle.
