Geocache Description:

Platform 6

Lyttelton Railway Station

I was lucky enough to spend some time in Lyttelton station prior to its damage in the 22nd of Feb quake, mainly dropping off boxes of paper work as we’d run out of room at Addington station.
Now it’s largely boarded up and supported by beams in a desperate bid to save on of Christchurch’s last remaining stations. The Rail and Maritime Union have made the central part of the station their new Christchurch location since their original office in Lyttelton was destroyed in the earthquake.

The current station was built in 1963 and is the 3rd station to be built in Lyttelton.

The first original station in Lyttleton was wooden and opened on the 9th of December 1867 on the same date the Lyttelton tunnel was opened.

The station was used for cruise ship passengers to board chartered passenger trains through to Arthurs Pass, but since the damage to the Port the ships have be disembarking in Akaroa and passengers boarding their train at Rolleston station.

The station boasts one of Christchurch’s only restored original signal boxes – you are more than welcome to climb the steps to look in the windows. This amazing restored signal box still houses its original signal levers, pot belly stove and original station masters uniform hanging on the wall. Very few places could you view such restored New Zealand rail history.

The co-ordinates will take you to the signal box, the cache is hidden under another restored piece of railway history which will become obvious when you visit the location.
