This cache series are all simple micro’s along the old HT&W RR track, now the Catamount XC Trail. The trail is flat and level, but with some wet spots. It’s only about a mile walk from parking, but do plan extra time for exploring.
All historical info comes from The Coming of the Train Vol. II ~ 1910-1922 by Brian Donelson, 2011.
This cache is in what I’m guessing is the remains of the Shumway Residence. (Placed there mainly because I have Shumways in the family tree and wondered if there is a connection!)
Back around the turn of the century, this area was booming. The railroad was coming to town, and bringing all kinds of new ventures. The attached photo shows the village of Sherman, Vermont in 1918. In 1920 the International Nitrogen Company (INC) had plans to build a calcium carbide plant at the Marble Quarry, but due to financial difficulties, construction ended after a few months. It’s all gone now, with only remnants left to the imagination.
Do plan some time to explore and wander in between caches! Lots of fun things to find - see the picture gallery, look up the old maps, and see what you can find. The quarry is a good uphill hike if you are so inclined to search it out - there is an old road that leads up behind the main village, from there it’s bushwhacking.
In our explorations, we also came across this interesting spot - not sure, but looking at the map, we guessed it was the Steam Heating Plant. See picture and additional waypoint to check it out.
6/19/12 Adding a waypoint for the little hidden path you need to take off the Cat. Trail - hard to see when the undergrowth has grown. trust the GPSr!
