Erosion is the natural wear of the soil and the rocks, and is transport, normally made by the effect of water or rain, by the wind or by the action of the unfreezing of the ice. The erosion destroys the structures (sands, clay oxides or humus) that compose the soil. They are transported to the lower grounds more particularly to rivers, lakes or seas.
The erosion is a serious problem, there should be adapted practices, in soil conservation, to minimize the consequences. In soils covered by vegetation the erosion is smaller and almost nonexistent but is a natural process always present, and important for the formation of the landscapes. The problem is when the man destroys the vegetation for agriculture, and let the soil exposed, in this way the erosion starts to affect a lot more the are, turning into the desertification.
Water erosion
Rainfall
There are three primary types of erosion that occur as a direct result of rainfall—sheet erosion, rill erosion, and gully erosion. Sheet erosion is generally seen as the first and least severe stage in the soil erosion process, which is followed by rill erosion, and finally gully erosion (the most severe of the three).
Rivers and streams
Valley or stream erosion occurs with continued water flow along a linear feature. The erosion is both downward, deepening the valley, and headward, extending the valley into the hillside. In the earliest stage of stream erosion, the erosive activity is dominantly vertical, the valleys have a typical V cross-section and the stream gradient is relatively steep. When some base level is reached, the erosive activity switches to lateral erosion, which widens the valley floor and creates a narrow floodplain.
Coastal erosion
Shoreline erosion, which occurs on both exposed and sheltered coasts, primarily occurs through the action of currents and waves but sea level (tidal) change can also play a role.
Glaciers
Glaciers erode predominantly by three different processes: abrasion/scouring, plucking, and ice thrusting. In an abrasion process, debris in the basal ice scrapes along the bed, polishing and gouging the underlying rocks, similar to sandpaper on wood. Glaciers can also cause pieces of bedrock to crack off in the process of plucking. In ice thrusting, the glacier freezes to its bed, then as it surges forward, it moves large sheets of frozen sediment at the base along with the glacier.
In this local, you will find a phenomena started by the humans, that unleashes a natural process, contrary to the normal ones, can be seen in a more fast way.
The local as been used during centuries to the removal of clay, for the production of pottery. After the abandon of the place, the nonexistence of vegetation that protected the soil, makes that all the hill side started suffering the extreme effects of erosion, creating an really interesting landscape. in wikipedia
