Captain John Coffeen was the first permanent settler of Cavendish. According to information on the Cavendish Historical Society website he and his wife headed to Charlestown, NH for supplies, and due to a snowstorm were not able to return for six weeks. During that time, one of the children became ill and died. The remaining children kept the body in the house until the parents returned. Because of the heavy snow, the child was buried across the road from the house. Coffeen decided this would be the family cemetery. Coffeens, Baldwins, and at least four Revolutionary soldiers are buried here.
