Von Osten schiebt sich eine Erdplatte gegen Italien. Der Druck der Adriatischen Platte hat den Apennin aufgefaltet, das Gebirge durchzieht das stiefelförmige Land der Länge nach. Im Westen drückt Europa. Korsika, das auf der Europäischen Platte liegt, bewegt sich mit drei Millimeter pro Jahr auf Italien zu. Der Apennin, über den die Hauptwasserscheide Italiens verläuft, beginnt im Nordwesten und bildet die Fortsetzung der Ligurischen Alpen. Die Grenze zwischen Alpen und Apennin bildet der "Col di Cadibona" (bei Savona). Von dort reicht der Apennin Richtung Osten, wo er sich nach Süden wendet und in den Abruzzen die größte Höhe über dem Meeresspiegel erreicht. (Frage 2)

Aber wie hoch ist ein Berg wirklich? Höhe bezeichnet den Abstand eines Objektpunktes von einer Referenzlinie oder -fläche. Entscheidend ist also die Referenz. In der Geodäsie benutzt man verschiedene Höhensysteme. Da sich die Systeme verschiedener Länder auf verschieden Nullpunkte, und sogar verschiedene Meere beziehen, entsteht an den Staatsgrenzen ein Sprung in der Höhenlage. (Frage3)
