Gedurende wat de Engelsen “The Battle of Gheel” noemen speelde zich bij Sas VI een tragische gebeurtenis af. Een herdenkingssteen herinnert er ons aan.
Tijdens deze slag lagen de Britse troepen verspreid achter het kanaal. Een tiental tanks lagen in Zelm, waar ze het bezoek kregen van Montgomery, hun opperbevelhebber. Van Zelm tot aan het kanaal was een nomansland waar zowel Duitse als Britse patrouilles actief waren.
In een tijdschrift van de “Molse Kamer voor Heemkunde” kan men lezen:
“De Duitsers zaten nog steeds achter het kanaal toen enkele Britten naar Sas VI aangestapt kwamen. De Duitsers zaten onder andere op de zolder van het café op Sas VI en hadden enkele pannen opzijgeschoven. De Britten vormden een gemakkelijk doelwit... De volgende dag lagen hun lijken er nog....”
In september 2014 werdt de steen vernieuwd en werdt er meer uitleg op het net gezet.

De omgeving van de herdenkingssteen wordt goed onderhouden door een ploeg van de gemeente Mol die de monumenten onderhoudt. Oppassen voor het verkeer.

Tribute to our liberators.
During what the English called "The Battle of Gheel" a tragic event took place at “Sas VI”. A memorial stone reminds us of this.
During this battle the British troops were scattered behind the channel. A dozen tanks were in “Zelm”, where they were visited by Montgomery, their commander. From “Zelm” to the canal was a nomansland where both German and British patrols were active.
In a journal of the "Mol Room for Local History" the following can be read:
"The Germans were still behind the channel when few Britons to Sas VI came striding. The Germans were among others in the attic of the cafe on Sas VI and had some pans aside, the British were an easy target ... The next day their bodies were still there .... "
In september 2014 a new memorial was placed en a site with additional details was published.

The area around the memorial stone is well maintained by a team of the Mol municipality who maintains the monuments. Watch out for traffic.

Hommage à nos libérateurs
Durant ce que les Anglais appellent “The Batthe of Gheel” un incident notoire c'est déroulé à “Sas VI”. Un mémorial nous le rappelle.
Durant cette bataille les troupes Anglaises étaient éparpillées derrière le canal. Une dizaine de chars étaient dispersés à Zelm. Ils y eurent la visite de Montgomery, leur commandant en chef. Entre Zelm et le canal il y avait un nomansland ou les patrouilles Allemandes et Anglaises étaient actives.
Dans une revue historique de Mol on peut lire :
« Les Allemands étaient toujours au delà du canal lorsqu'une patrouille Anglaise cheminait vers « Sas VI ». Les Allemands occupaient le grenier de la taverne et avaient déplacé quelques tuiles du toit. Les Anglais formaient une proie facile. Le lendemain leurs corps y gisaient encore.... »
En septembre 2014 le mémorial fut renouvelé et un site avec plus de détails fut édité.

Les alentours du monument sont entretenus par une équipe qui s'occupe des monuments de la commune de Mol. Toutefois prenez garde à la circulation.
