St Michaels is the Parish Church of Central and West Braintree. Founded in 1199, the church building was probably just rectangular in shape. Many additions to the church were added over the years including the Tower in 1240, the spire in 1349, the south chapel named Jesus Chapel in 1535 and the installation of a large organ in 1860. Large scale renovation of the church took place in 1864 to 1866 when much of the original work was lost. The original bells (6 in total) were replaced in 1858 with additional bells added in 1899 and 1972 (making a total of 10 bells).
The church has many historical features but one of the most interesting is the tower and spire as they are one of the highest in Essex.
