In the past, most popular board games have been limited to simple roll-and-move mechanics, whose outcome depends heavily on the luck of the die. Settlers of Catan, published 1995 in Germany brought a change to this, and started a new era of "German style" board games, that emphasize on strategy, multiple paths to victory, short to medium playing times, while downplaying luck and direct conflict (no player elimination). Despite the name "German-style", "Eurogames", or sometimes "designer games", these types of games have enjoyed huge success worldwide, and boardgaming today is a growing hobby.
