The origin of the Blue Lagoon:
The existence of the Blue Lagoon is due to alteration of the granite massif of Sintra which, by action of the various agents of erosion, originate sands and clays that will coat and seal the bottom of the pond preventing water that accumulates there does not drain, and here the fundamental role of clays due to the small size of its particles.
It is easily viewable by the erosive action caused vegetation that grows between the cracks of granite and where you can observe extensions of roots crossing and fragment the rock.
One can also observe a pink granite are. This color is due to the abundant presence of a mineral called orthosis (alkali feldspar) and, between the rest mineralogical composition, stand out as quartz, feldspar and mica many black (biotite).
In the area surrounding the Blue Lagoon, and generally throughout the Serra de Sintra, one can observe its characteristic landscape - the 'chaos of blocks' (sets of blocks scattered across the landscape) and 'rocks' ( rocky elevations that stand out in the landscape looks cliff). This landscape is typical of areas whose lithological composition is essentially granite.
Fauna of the Blue Lagoon:

Out of water, the most characteristic species are the rabilongo tit, tit the collier, the wood pigeon, and sometimes even the hawk gives an air of grace, in addition to other more common birds that can be found.
