Geocache Description:

Little G’s Red Shifts Mind Blowers Series 1.4 We have established 3 things so far in this series

In the beginning there was only energy 1.1 – that can be converted into mass.

The energy involved is huge in a single atom 1.2

We live in a Universe that is virtually too big to comprehend 1.3 but we were able to look at our solar system in 1 km line and start to complete the basic understanding.

We next go onto the proof that we are in an Expanding Universe.

Einstein’s calculations and theories were supported by Experimental Data from Hubble Background Radiation Red Shift and Doppler Effect explain this phenomenon of the expanding universe.

The spectrum from distant galaxies are shifted The speed of light is 3 x10 8 ms-1 in air compared to sound 330ms-1 is slow we don't notice car headlamps changing colour! But we do hear change is sound as a police card siren as it passes With galaxies they are moving very quickly.

Hubble noticed that the light from th e galaxies was red-shifted. Dark lines (signatures of elements) in light waves are shifted towards the red end of the spectrum: Picture Red is a longer wavelength of light, so the frequency is less. This means that the galaxies must all be moving away from us.

The Big Bang Theory is the next step in the theory Red shift completely supports the big bang theory. The big bang theory is that the universe began from a very small initial point. The universe then expanded from that point to give us the universe we see today.

The light from distant galaxies is red shifted (this tells us the galaxies are moving away from us) and the further away the galaxy the greater the red shift (this tells us that the more distant the galaxy the faster it is moving).

The Last Piece of the Jig-saw Cosmic Background Microwave Radiation (CMBR) A second piece of evidence that supports the big bang theory is cosmic background microwave radiation. Electromagnetic radiation which was present shortly after the big bang is now observed as background microwave radiation.
