Geocache Description:

During World War II and The Holocaust an estimate of 100.000 - 150.000 lives were taken in the ravine of Babij Jar, on the outskirts of Kiev. On March 1st a group of Swedish geocachers will come to Kiev for a visit. In the afternoon we will gather here at the monument of Babij Jar. Local geocachers as well as other geocachers visiting are welcome to join.

Though a geocaching event is usually a joyful occasion this is of course not possible on a location like this one. This is a place for respect and rembrance so please take that into consideration. We will meet and greet but then everyone is free to walk around the area reflecting on what happened here in the way he or she finds best.

Of the estimated 100.000 - 150.000 murdered in Babij Jar 33.771 Jews were killed in a single massacre on September 29–30, 1941.The decision to kill all the Jews in Kiev was made by the military governor, Major-General Kurt Eberhard, the Police Commander for Army Group South, SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich Jeckeln, and the Einsatzgruppe C Commander Otto Rasch. It was carried out by Sonderkommando 4a soldiers, along with the aid of the SD and SS Police Battalions. The massacre was the largest single mass killing for which the Nazi regime and its collaborators were responsible during its campaign against the Soviet Union and is considered to be the largest single massacre in the history of The Holocaust.

Apart from Jews thousands of Soviet POWs, communists, Romani, Ukrainian nationalists and civilian hostages were murdered at Babij Jar.
