Hannah Robinson's father was a wealthy South County landowner who disinherited her when she eloped with her French dance tutor. Alas, she lived in poverty and bore 9 children to this scoundrel. In ill health, her father relented and went to get her in Providence. As she returned to her South County home to die, she asked her father to stop at the rock where she and her lover first met, to see the stunning views one last time . She died the next day.
Take time to climb to the top of the tower; trees now block part of what once was an incredible view, but good views of Jamestown and the Narrow River are still there. The rock - also called Sad Rock, Crying Rock and Meditation Rock, is a short walk behind the tower. Also walk over to the ledge where Hannah must have sat.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL - the tower is located at a very busy intersection of RT 1, Bridgetown Road and 138 South. We recommend that you go down Bridgetown Rd and turn around to enter the parking lot without crossing traffic.
