This cache has been archived.

The Chapmen: This phase of life with my boys has faded. No more caching for them. Will be taking them all in. This is the second of five. It's been fun.

Geocache Description:

This cache has something for everyone. I think it is Halifax’s first multi-cache. If you follow this cache you will get an introduction to a couple of lesser-known Halifax landmarks and have an interesting drive and a walk. It is a good intro to Geocaching as the walked terrain is not that hard to cope with.

27 Aug 04 Update- Revisited the cache to replace the container with one that is more "Bulletproof" and should be water tight. Amazing that our old container survived Jaun and White Juan. All is nice and dry now! To do this cache you will need some form of transportation as you need to go to both sides of Halifax harbour to complete the find. Or spend the day walking. The contents of the cache follow loosely the named military theme.

Here are the details. You have to get information from two landmarks and apply it mathematically to the listed position to ‘cipher’ the actual location of the cache.

You may go to either of the precursor locations in any order, but you must find the correct numerical answers to the following questions:

Question 1.

At location: N44° 38.775 W063° 36.664 When did Wing Commander Saunders end his term as a flying instructor, and as the manager of the Halifax Airport? (What year?) Divide the answer by 100! Save the result.

Question 2.

At location N44° 38.595 W063° 32.270 What was the construction cost of FORT CLARENCE in £? Divide the answer by 1000! Save the result.

You now have two ‘adjustment factors’ to apply to the position below. The numbers you have calculated should be in the form of (mm.mmm) they represent the number of minutes of correction to apply to the seed position below.

Now, to find the Lat & Long of the Cache and collect your reward, ADD the minutes of correction you obtained at site 1 to the latitude and SUBTRACT the minutes of correction you obtained at site 2 from the longitude.

Here is the seed position:

N44° 16.037
W064° 22.964

Good luck! The cache is clearly marked as such and originally contained:

Doggy Treats, Toothpaste & Floss, Air force Badges, microwave popcorn, plastic soldiers, pencils and a sharpener (for log keeping), a Sea King coffee mug with attached travel bug (this one is a hitchhiker, please take it to another cache), a nice sized jar of the Captain’s finest, a camera to record your adventure, a Shearwater Badge courtesy of the Shearwater Aviation Museum (stop there after your trip and tell them you were at the cache), and other goodies.

Have fun.
