Bývalá synagoga ve Čkyni z r. 1828 je - spolu se synagogou v Bechyni - nejstarší dochovanou židovskou svatyní v jižních Čechách, jedinou synagogou na okrese Prachatice a jednou z posledních zachovaných vesnických synagog v Čechách vůbec. Jde o rozměrnou (masivní) jednotraktovou stavbu v prostém klasicistním slohu, v níž je situována hlavní a zimní modlitebna a několik dalších místností.
 
Budova byla v minulosti po architektonicko-umělecké stránce znehodnocena přestavbou a adaptací na obytný dům a řemeslnou dílnu, což postihlo hlavní modlitebnu. Na druhé straně se zase díky tomuto využití vůbec dochovala a nestihl ji osud mnoha jiných synagog, které byly pro zchátralost demolovány. 

Budova byla až do srpna 1989 v majetku pana Španingera, který ji zdědil po svých předcích. 17.8.1989 byla prodána do vlastnictví Jednoty, spotřební družstvo Vimperk. Dne 15.1.1991 byla synagoga vykoupena z prostředků tehdejšího krajského památkového útvaru do vlastnictví obce Čkyně a za finanční podpory Židovské obce Praha vypracován projekt záchrany a uvedení synagogy do původního stavu. Toto zajišťovala Společnost pro obnovu synagogy ve Čkyni, která ve spolupráci s Obcí Čkyně zahájila roku 1992 rekonstrukci. Po finanční dotaci Okresního úřadu Prachatice následovaly dotace Střešního fondu a dále se na rekonstrukci podílejí sponzoři, donátoři i drobní dárci.

Synagoga se nachází ve středu obce a je její dominantou. Záměrem je, aby tato synagoga sloužila po rekonstrukci jako regionální židovské muzeum jižních Čech, výtvarná galerie se stálou výstavou malířů blízkých okresu Prachatice, a víceúčelové kulturní zařízení, včetně knihovny se zaměřením na židovskou tematiku a koncertní i přednáškové síně.

Zrekonstruovaná synagoga bude vhodně navazovat na již dokončený židovský hřbitov, jenž je jako cenná památka uveden v celostátních i mezinárodních příručkách a tedy poměrně hodně navštěvován.

The former Ckyne synagogue from the year 1828 is - together with the synagogue in Bechyne - the oldest Jewish sanctuary in South Bohemia, the only one in the Prachatice district, and one of the last preserved village synagogues in our republic.
 
The building is of a large, massy construction in simple Neo-classicism. It was devalued in the past in architectonic line by reconstruction and adaptation to a residential object. These was made in the main chapel. On the other hand thanks to this the building was preserved, not destroyed as many other synagogues. 

The synagogue was a property of Mr Spaninger, who had heritated it, as long as up the year 1989. On August 17, 1989 he sold it to Jednota, Vimperk Cooperative Society . On January 1, 1991 the newly established company gathered money from  former Region Office for Care of Historical Monuments and with help of that time mayor bought the building to the property of the Ckyne town. The Prague Jewish Community provided money for the project of restoration. 

In 1992 the reconstruction started.

The synagogue is located in the centre of the town and dominates the surroundings. The aim of the Company is that the synagogue will serve as a Jewish Museum of the Region; art gallery with work of art of significant local artists - some of them have donated their art to the synagogue already; and multi-specialized institution including a library, concert and lecture hall, and of course, the room of pray which has been preserved in almost origin state. In the property of the Company there are several unique things from the origin synagogue, other things were promised to be lent by the Prague Jewish Museum, where numbers of objects from South Bohemia are in deposits. 

The total costs of the reconstruction work is estimated to be around 7 million crowns, further costs, e.g. equipment, decoration, restoration of origin paintings, arrangement of the garden, enclosing and security of the object, will be other 3 million. 

The reconstructed synagogue will fit in with the finished Jewish cemetery, which is stated as an appreciate monument in international guide-books and often visited.
