Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coords.. to find the final ADD  the number listed in the name to the posted coords.

In trying to determine a new challenge for the area.. I spent some time looking at other challenges and thinking about what would be fun yet healthy.. so no park n grab run of 100 here.. This one will require some work.. (More for some then others).. Then to decide.. What is doable for more than a select few? This was a real struggle.. The lazy part of me was leaning towards 25 (which would still be a lot of work for me) or to set a high goal had me leaning towards 50! For reasons I will not share at this moment.. 53 hit me… OK so let’s split the difference between 53 and 25 and call it 39.. or should I say 39,000!

The Challenge

The basic idea is simple; all you need to do is gain at least 39,000 feet of total accumulated elevation under your own human power and do it while going to find a geocache. (So those drives up the mountains will not count!)

You don’t even have to WALK down if you don’t want to though it’s highly recommended. And since this is all about the gain, you can take the shuttle down MT. Washington.. But it only counts if you WALK up it!

The Spirit

The spirit of this challenge cache is to: < br>
• Have fun
• Promote caching, exercise and outdoor activity
• Promote map skills
• Provide a personal challenge

The Rules

To log a find on this cache you must:

1. Accumulate at least 39,000 feet of elevation gain

Start Route Gain Min. Start
Tuckerman’s Ravine Mount Washington 1820 ft

2. Gain the elevation using your own power

o Use any combination of hiking, snow shoeing, skiing or mountain biking
o Descent may be by any means

3. Find an active physical cache that was published at least one month before you find it

The one month blackout is to avoid this challenge being a motive for placing caches

o The following DO NOT count
 Caches published less than one month before you find it
 DNFs (you must find the cache)
 Archived and temporarily disabled caches
 Virtuals, earthcaches, etc.
 Your own caches

Exception: finds are allowed on your adopted caches provided you found them before adopting them

 Puzzle and multi-caches

4. Gain more than the minimal amount of qualifying elevation in each trip (500 feet)

o A trip is defined as a single human powered event and includes all your human powered effort in between

Multiple trips can be done on the same trail or to nearly the same destination provided a different cache is found on each trip Multiple caches can be found during one trip to create a route with more elevation gain

o Each segment within a trip must be a minimum of at least 100 feet each and the total for the entire trip must be at least 500 feet

Typically the accumulated elevation gain is the net difference between the trailhead and the cache. However, many trails or routes have significant ups and downs that add to the accumulated elevation gain and these may be included provided each segment is a minimum of 100’ vertically and are logged per the logging requirements

o Elevation gain is based on the topo contour lines per Topo Maps o Only elevation that is gained directly related to finding a cache qualifies for the challenge

Elevation gain that is not directly related to find a cache is fine to do during a trip but it won't count towards the challenge

5. We had hoped to level the playing field by not permitting pervious finds…. But Ground Speak Rules will not allow this limitation. So Past finds count..

I would like to give BRAGGING RIGHTS for FTF in the following categories:
~FTF using Past Finds as part of the numbers gain (and have signed the final)
~FTF From the Beginning… to those who do not count finds that were FOUND PRIOR TO 1/1/13
~FTF REDUX. For those who have found all the caches in the past, but want to start this challenge from the beginning start date of 1/1/13.. Now to be fair, we know there are a number of cachers who have found many of the mountain top caches (or hidden them). Again to level the playing field: if you plan to use a previously found cache… you will need to REFIND the cache AND post a note on the cache page that it was revisited on or after 1/1/13 while on a hike.

6. Posting stats as you go along (optional) o Keep your hike stats by posting notes after completing hikes. You can keep editing one note with total stats for all hikes as you go along or log individual hikes as you see fit.

The Logging Requirements

You need to post enough information to follow your trip so I can do a check and in case we want to do your hike ourselves. For each trip post the information noted below in a note type log (post as you go). The list is numbered for reference only and the information doesn’t need to be in the same order, it just needs to be included, so feel free to post in your own style if you’d like. It’s also helpful number your hikes to keep track.

For typical single segment trips include items 1 through 5 below.
If you have more than one segment of elevation gain that you would like to claim then include item 6.

1. Date

o Provide the date the trip was completed as the logging date might be different

2. Route

o Name the trails in order traveled (as an alternate, attached a screenshot of your mapped GPS track)
o Details about off-trail travel

This information is only necessary if you traveled off-trail.

For each section of off-trail travel provide:

 Starting location
 Ending location
 If your general route between the starting and ending locations is not immediately obvious then provide additional information about it
Describe accurately or attach a marked up map

3. Total elevation gained

o The amount of elevation that you are claiming (a minimum of 500 feet gain per trip to be counted)

4. Starting location and elevation

o Where you started your elevation gain

5. Destination cache code and elevation

o The elevation of the cache you found
o Provide the GC code for the cache

6. Details about additional elevation segments

This item is only necessary when claiming trips that have more than one segment of elevation gain

Provide the following additional information for each segment of 100’ or more that you wish to claim:

o Starting location and elevation
o Ending location and elevation

Additional Information

• For each location, use the cache code, a place name on Trails or Topos or provide the coordinates

Please provide coordinates in the format NXX XX.XXX, WXXX XX.XXX so I can cut and paste. This makes life much easier for me

• For each elevation, use Topo Maps or another topo map and round to the nearest 10'

Software

• Basecamp

A trip-planning software by Garmin. It can be used to view the Topo and Trails map sets and the official elevation file

• Other software you use to tabulate elevation
• Internet pages that document elevations.
