Geocache Description:

Batesford Bridge spanning the Moorabool River was built of local bluestone in 1859.  It is the third bridge on the site, the first built 1846 which incorporated a toll gate being washed away 2 years later and the second being damaged but surviving the 1855 floods. The new 1859 bridge survived the great flood of 1880 when the houses of Batesford were "submerged to the rooftops", and many many floods since.

The bridge which is best viewed from downstream, behind the pub, comprises five elegant arches which unusually are built without keystones in a similar manner to the famous Richmond bridge in Tasmania.
Traffic now passes via a new road bridge opened 1971 bypassing the structure that served for 112 years.
Parking is available on the eastern side of the bridge, enter service road past the pub, whilst you access the cache and view this historic structure.

The cache is a micro  within some camouflage.

It is NOT in the bridge buttress so please don't pick at the mortar. We want the bridge to last for another 100 years, at least!! Please do not access via the pub grounds as this is private property and is fenced off from the bridge area.
